Dad’s word is mantra for Gautham Karthik

By Rinku Gupta  17th April 2013 08:25 AM

Picture
He was born with star trappings, being the third generation of actors after granddad Muthuraman and father Karthik. He had a dream debut with a Mani Ratnam film but despite his rise to fame, Gautham Karthik seems to have none of the attitude that usually comes with the territory. Two more films in his kitty are going to keep him busy this year, but Gautham is determined to follow his dad’s advice and ‘keep it simple’. In a chat with CE, he opens up on how life changed post Kadal and his upcoming movies.

“One thing that’s changed after Kadal is that I can’t move about too freely in Chennai. For instance, I was watching a movie in a mall and visited the food court for a quick bite. But the staff got excited and I ended up in the kitchen posing for photos with them! Both lunch and the movie got delayed,” he says. But Gautham doesn’t let all this get in his way. Every day, before sunrise, he jogs four km on city roads from his home in Poes Garden. “There’s hardly anyone around so early and I’m undisturbed. Only a Pomeranian chased me once,” he chuckles.

Things seem easier during trips to Bangalore, where he studied. “In Bangalore, even today I travel by auto or enjoy a bus ride for `20 in an AC bus from my house to my old college campus, to hang out with my friends and grab a cheese dosa with them,” says Gautham.

Ask him about his upcoming movies and Gautham grins with unabashed glee. “I’m super excited about my very first trip abroad next month. It’s for a song shoot and I just cant wait. I’ve got my passport ready.”

Gautham has every reason to be happy as he is going to be shooting for two films simultaneously. One is directed by Silambattam fame Saravanan and is reportedly titled Sippai. Kumki heroine Laxmi Menon pairs with him in this commercial entertainer.

Gautham plays a college boy and confirms that Yuvan Shankar Raja will be composing music. His other flick is the remake of the Telugu Ala Modalaindi to be directed by a newbie Ravi Thiagarajan and produced by Ravikumar Productions. Music director D Imman has already scored one song that’s going to be shot at a scenic locale abroad next month. The hunt for the heroine is on.

So why did he opt for a remake film? “ Dad and I saw the original and were laughing till next morning! It’s a great opportunity for me to do a rom-com and try my hand at comedy,” says Gautham. So does his father help him with his career? “Though the final decision is mine, I always ask dad to listen to scripts with me. He has immense experience and I couldn’t ask for a better guide.”

We hear that this is a fresh script, and a top production company in Kollywood is backing the project. I’ve no time for my mom, where is the time for a girlfriend: Gautham Karthik

09th March 213
Picture
Bangalore-boy Gautham Karthik seems to be deluged with offers after his debut in Mani Ratnam's Kadal. The 23-year-old, who is in the city on a break from his hectic schedule in Chennai, welcomed us to his unassuming apartment that was filled with the laughter of his family and friends, for a little chat. Son offamous actor Karthik Muthuraman, the young actor speaks about his father's role in his career, the big break, his relationship and upcoming projects. Excerpts:

What role has your father played in your life and career? Well, he's pushed me to build my own foundation in the industry and do everything myself. So, in a way he has helped me find my own strength and he's given me some of the most crucial advice. He always asked me to believe in myself as a character and make sure that my personality comes out through the character so that it brings a certain life to it. And, these were some of the most important words of advice that helped me through the movie. My father has always been there for me, but at the same time, he has given me the space to make my own decisions.

How did Kadal happen? I was doing my final year graduation in Bangalore and my dad suddenly called me one day and said, 'Gautham, Mani sir wants to meet', so I said OK and went down to Chennai, met Mani sir, and Mani sir asked me if I could speak Tamil. I said, 'Yes sir, I can.' He said, 'OK fine, you can go,' and sent me back to Bangalore. I was confused. About a week or so after that, he called me again and said, 'I have a story and want you to listen to it,' and so, I went back, and he narrated the film's story to me. I really loved it and said, 'Mani sir, that's a great story', and he said, 'OK, you can leave,' and sent me back. Two weeks later, he called up again and says, 'Gautham, you really have to come down now, we have something going.' I agreed (with the thought of being an assistant director) and landed in Chennai. This time, I was asked to act in a couple of romantic scenes and I was even more confused, but I acted them out after which, I was again sent back home. When I got home, my dad showed me a message from Mani sir that said, 'I'm very happy with Gautham, he's the hero of the movie.' So, that's how I got the opportunity.

How did things change for you once you signed the offer? A lot of preparations for the film took place soon after my part in the film was decided. Most of my preparation was for the character I was playing — a fisherman's role. So, I used to go with a fisherman to Marina Beach early in the morning. I'd go fishing with them for quite a long time (4 am-10 am) during which they taught me all about the ocean, fishing and the ways to survive if one got stuck in the ocean. I also learnt sailing. And, since it was a film after all, I needed some fight and dance training. It was nothing specific for Kadal but, a general training to get my body into the flow. I (along withThulasi) used to go for emoting classes and that helped me break out of my comfort zone. I also had to watch some of Mani sir's films to understand his style of work.

Kadal did not do well at the box office but, you received a lot of appreciation. People have different opinions. It's up to them to like a movie or not. But, I'm happy and grateful that Mani sir gave me this huge an opportunity. Everything I portrayed in the film was because of him. I think he's done a fantastic job and can watch the film a hundred times, not just because I'm in it, but because I know the whole story — even the parts he had to delete due to time constraints. About the appreciation I've received, I've been invited to a lot of colleges for festivals and made a lot of appearances. I find that I have been supported and appreciated by the youth and that's quite a nice feeling. When you get people of your age who understand what you're going through, to support and help you... that's something else. It makes me feel like I really have to put out more just for them, just to see them smile.

Any upcoming projects? Everything I've got so far has only been Tamil. I can't let out any details as of now because I haven't signed anything yet. Only once I get back to Chennai and finalize on the films can I talk about them. But, I've listened to over 50 scripts in the last month and hope to do two or three films by the end of this year.

Is Gautham Karthik dating? Nope. No girlfriend, nothing. Where is the time? I was busy with shoots for two years and have been travelling like crazy. I don't have time to make calls. I don't even call my mum, so where will I have time for a girlfriend!

Embarrassed by his school-boy excuses

By Shilpa Vasudevan  04th March 2013 12:00 AM

Gautham Karthik, 23, had a dream debut with Mani Ratnam’s Kadal. An undergraduate student of media studies, English and psychology at Christ University, Bangalore, Gautham says college was a far cry from the shy days as a school kid in Ooty. Due to packed film schedules, Gautham had to take a break from college after completing five semesters in 2011. Currently listening to a lot of scripts, Gautham  is also planning to finish his course. He rewinds his fun-filled college days for edex.

What did college teach you?

My college years were certainly the best years of my life. That was the time I learnt the importance of extracurricular activities, and, of courses, studies. I was part of the band, Dead End Street, and met different people and also had a chance to experience different cultures.

What was your proudest moment in college?

The first time I went on stage. I was asked to perform as well as compere for events. These were small signs of appreciation for the hard work you do.

Have you had any embarrassing moments in college?

I used to bunk a bit and what was more embarrassing than bunking was the school-boy excuses I gave — it used to be the need to use the men’s room while my teacher would catch me at the cafeteria. At other times, I used to tell them that I missed breakfast and needed to get away. Since I used to score decent marks, they spared me. I also remember an awkward moment with one of my buddies in college choir. Whenever we happened to deliver a good song, he used to high five me on my butt!

How did you score points with the opposite gender?

In school, I was very quiet and avoided the girls, or rather, they didn’t know of my existence. In college, I came out of my shell. In fact, my gang of friends always had a lot of girls. It could be because Christ University was dominated by girls. There were plenty of crushes and harmless flirting. But I left it at that.

Midway into the course, people came to know that I was Karthik’s son and adulation started growing. Due to this, a prank that was an annual tradition became a damp squib — we used to go to our junior’s classes and pretend to be first years. But my celebrity status gave us away.

There was also this funny incident at a pub where I was working part-time. I played a romantic song for a newly-married couple and at the end of it, the young woman professed her love for me much to the chagrin of her husband. I was left red-faced with embarrassment.

Did you have any rifts with professors?

You don’t get along with some teachers because they don’t like you being yourself. Not being an aggressive guy, the most I would have done on such situations was to just walk off.

Where did you hang out in college with friends?

My favourite hot spots were Cake Walk and Cuppa near college. Being a gaming freak, I dragged my friends to most of the gaming joints in Bangalore.

What extracurricular activities were you involved in?

I was part of an NGO, You and I. We conducted weekly camps to help orphans, physically challenged kids, etc, in government homes in Bangalore and Chennai. And, of course, there was my band, which was into acoustic classical rock. I was its rhythm guitarist.

FROM MADDY TO GAUTHAM - THE VALENTINE'S DAY SPREAD

By Dilani Rabindran 14 Feb 2013
Picture
The evidence lies on social media and in smiles in theatres running Kadaleverywhere – a star is born in Gautham Karthik. Although the film is receiving mixed reviews, people agree that one of the highlights of Mani Ratnam’s latest is Gautham – who is continuing the Muthuraman family tradition of formidable romantic heroes.

Whether due to nature or nurture, Gautham has given a solid performance – bringing a fresh innocence to the screen. All eyes are now on him to continue the family legacy, but also to defend his title as Tamil cinema’s new, “chosen” romantic hero – especially since he is the first hero Mani Ratnam has introduced in 13 years. A little over a decade ago Ratnam gave us Madhavan in another monumental romantic debut in Alaipayudhey.

Although all Tamil films usually contain some romance, such that all heroes enter as ‘lovers’ in some way – there’s nothing like debuting as one of Mani’s romantic leads. In 2000 Madhavan stole the hearts of young girls everywhere as the flirtatious Karthik, who had eyes only for Shakti. 13 years later Gautham has swept up some of that same following, along with new fans, as the charming Thomas, whose heart beats only for Bea. Any actor considers it an honor to be cast in a Mani Ratnam film, but to be chosen as his lead for your debut brings a singular level of merit, and in many ways Mani Ratnam gave Madhavan and Gautham very similar launches.

Both stars received the debuts of a lifetime when they got the chance to portray their dramatic acting, subtle comedic timing and classic romantic charm in their first roles that showed them pining for girls society told them they should not love. Although both their debut characters can be categorized as romantics, they also underwent transformations, showed us a wide range of emotions and had their respective shades of grey. Karthik was in many ways a selfish and inconsiderate new husband, and Thomas, as an impressionable youth willing to sin in the pursuit of money and power, has much more obvious negative qualities.

Any Mani Ratnam film is a career booster for an Indian actor, but inAlaipayudhey and Kadal the iconic director gave Madhavan and Gautham a superior inauguration through complex characters in two very different settings – but both of which focus on them eventually appreciating the meaning of true love. In typical Mani-style he provided just the right mix of “bad boy” and “doting lover” that all girls dream of in both of their feature performances, and although they debuted as romantics the scope with which they performed and the realism of their debut characters has and will prevent typecasting.

Today Madhavan is a pan-Indian heartthrob with an immense international fan following after starring in many critical and commercial Tamil and Hindi blockbusters. Today Gautham is only one film old, but it won’t stay that way for long, as his stellar first performance has already made him a household name. As two of Mani Ratnam’s greatest discoveries Madhavan and Gautham have given new meanings to this generation’s version of young love. Their outstanding debuts are of course a testament to their talent, but with Mani Ratnam as their first director introducing them as epic romantic heroes they almost instantly became the stuff of dreams. So this Valentine’s day when cinema fans reminisce on their favorite Tamil love stories and the men who led them, gratitude should be shown onto the dream-weaver Mani Ratnam, who gave us two actors who can make fans everywhere laugh, cry, panic, swoon and fall in love.
